Planning Experts to Present on Community College Enrollment at SCUP 2024 Annual Conference

Join our team at the upcoming Society for College and University Planning, commonly referred to as SCUP, 2024 Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Senior Associate and Senior Planner Woody Giles, AICP, and Principal and Planning and Urban Design Leader Yogesh Saoji, AIA, AICP, will present a session titled “Addressing the Demographic Cliff: Community College Perspectives.” The session will explore challenges community colleges are facing, including declines in student enrollment, and how institutions can combat these types of challenges.

The session will discuss Cuyahoga Community College, commonly referred to as Tri-C, and Community College of Philadelphia, commonly referred to as CCP. Both institutions are implementing innovative initiatives, partnerships, and projects that address declining enrollments and surplus space through integrated planning. By using spatial re-organization to deal with surplus space and leveraging vacant and aging facilities for student services and community spaces, urban community colleges can attract and retain students.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Discussing enrollment challenges and the extent of surplus spaces with the context of community colleges and their mission and vision.
  • Communicating the extent to which the demographic cliff creates surplus spaces on campus in order to empower stakeholders and begin building consensus.
  • Exploring innovative approaches, solutions, projects, and partnerships for oversized facilities to repurpose, renovate, and replace aging facilities.
  • Building on strong institutional culture in your planning processes to continue momentum through institutional complexity and organizational structures.

Woody and Yogesh will present alongside Abigail Dohanos, Dean for the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Tri-C and John Wiggins, Associate Vice President of Facilities and Construction at CCP.

The session will take place on the first day of the conference, Monday, July 22, from 2:50 to 3:50 PM.

Be sure to attend our other sessions to learn about the role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in higher education and space utilization strategies.
