The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts聽is an art school and museum spanning not one, but two historic buildings 鈥� the 1876 Landmark Building and the adjacent 1916 Hamilton Building. The Landmark Building, designed by renowned Philadelphia architects Frank Furness and George Hewitt, is the first structure in the U.S. specifically designed for fine arts instruction and exhibition, and is considered one the finest examples of late Victorian architecture. Since its conception, the historic Landmark Building was maintained, but not altered from the original function or architectural condition. When our team was tapped for the master plan and subsequent renovation, we translated Victorian ideals into the 21st century. Now, the academy is ready to accommodate the ever-growing program within the fixed site, while preserving PAFA鈥檚 historic charm.
The first purpose-built art museum in the U.S., the Renwick Gallery was built in 1859. Up until a few years ago, it saw its last renovation in the early 1970s. In 2015, we took on the challenge to update and improve this National Historic Landmark鈥檚 building systems without damaging its historic status. Through out-of-the-box thinking and a sustainability goal that set the bar high, we replaced and improved major building infrastructure systems, enhanced historic features, and improved interior conditions to ensure the preservation and efficient operation of this treasured structure for future generations. In a visually striking building that looks as if it would be topping Washington, D.C.'s sky-high rent prices, the city's most vulnerable find a home and opportunities. Operating on the premise that chronic homelessness is preventable with the right support, an unprecedented collaboration between public, private, philanthropic, and nonprofit partners culminated in the opening of the John and Jill Ker Conway Residence. With 124 units 鈥� and striking views of the U.S. Capitol and Washington Monument 鈥� nearly half are dedicated to housing homeless veterans with the rest reserved for those referred by the District's Department of Behavioral Health and low-income residents.
