A Home for Excellence

Project Location

Los Angeles, CA

Project

Heritage Hall

Area

70,000 SF

Project Type

Sports

At the center of the University of Southern California campus lies the heart of Trojan athletic tradition–Heritage Hall. Opened in 1971, it has served as the home of USC’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics since that time. Our design for its modernization enables USC to celebrate both the rich history and future excellence of its athletic tradition.

The two-story main lobby is now a light-filled Hall of Champions featuring a Spirit of Troy exhibit space celebrating the multiple NCAA Championships, Heisman Trophy winners, Olympians, legendary coaches, student-athletes, and achievements of USC’s 21 athletics programs. The lower level, accessible only to student-athletes and athletics staff, features a lounge for Women of Troy student-athletes, a rowing room with 35 ergometers, a golf simulation lab with a virtual indoor driving range and six-hole putting green, and other spaces that support student-athletes.

This project involved a complete renovation of the existing 70,000-SF building that relocated existing services and provided new spaces for athletic programs. The renovation added offices for athletic administrators and coaches, a sports performance center, and a dedicated television studio with a direct feed to the Pac-12 Network. The addition of skylights throughout the corridors and internal spaces of the lower level allows natural light to now penetrate many spaces. An outdoor plaza was enhanced with decorative paving, a fountain, and on-grade skylights. An existing ancillary building was converted into a dynamic conference room overlooking the updated plaza area.

Honor

Hall of Champions

The University of Southern California has such a storied past of athletic excellence—from producing NCAA individual and team champions to medal winners on the Olympic stage—that a major goal of the Heritage Hall renovation was to create a space worthy of sharing the amazing achievements accomplished by USC athletes. The dramatic Hall of Champions, with its bold displays, showcases USC’s past and ongoing athletic excellence.

Development

Student-Athlete Development

While the Hall of Champions tells the stories of ultimate competitive success, one of Heritage Hall’s main purposes is to provide USC student-athletes with the tools to produce those winning results. From locker rooms and lounge spaces to workout rooms and academic services, the facility gives Trojan athletes the ability to better themselves in every aspect of their athletic and academic endeavors.

Celebration

The Fan Experience

While Heritage Hall’s main focus is on the development of student-athletes, it also serves as a point of pride for all Trojan fans. From the dramatic Hall of Champions celebrating success to its place along the route of the Spirit of Troy marching band’s walk to the Coliseum on game day, Heritage Hall plays an important role in the connection fans have with USC Athletics.
